    Hi,

I was wondering about buying a new phone (currently have iPhone6 plus).

I have usually bought new phone but I am tempted about buying used one. Has anybody bought used phones/iPhones and if you have how was the experience?

I buy them all the time , never any issue. I would recommend buying from a trusted seller if buying on Adverts etc that has a couple of hundred feedback. I generally avoid those shops in City Centre for used phones as have had problems with them. Same with Donedeal , stay away as no feedback system.

Find a trusted seller on Adverts.ie with great feedback and buy from them. Do all the basic checks and try your sim in it and make a call. Also you always check the IMEI to make sure its a clean phone (not blacklisted) by using a free/paid site like imeipro.info (free) or Checkmend (paid).

Depends which model you wish to buy? Gather iPhone 8? Makes no sense to buy 7 as it would be similar to 6 (bar the camera). Unless you are looking at an X?

With Apple event in 2 days, I would hold off and wait as the prices will drop after the announcement and you will have more to choose from. I upgrade every year (and sell my phone privately) and even though I look after my phones (always glass cover, back cover etc) I dont think I would buy a used phone. I have heard of many issues and I would want to avoid them. Having said that there are decent sellers out there but you need to do your homework: check icloud, IMEI, battery etc the usual

Have a look at Amazon, you might get a bargain as well but remember Apple's warranty is for a year after the original sale so if buying from a reseller it might be less than that

Will be plenty on here selling I’d think. Think they are allowed post a link to it on here so maybe keep an eye on regulars on here selling.

Apple warranty is 6 years as per Irish consumer law. Have had a 3 year old iPhone 6 replaced by them.

That’s the sale of goods act IIRC

Thank you for your answer, the new iPhones dont seem that tempting. Nothing new except even faster chip. I think i will do some scouting and watch how the new models affect prices! Hoping they will drop the prices of used phones as well!

As for me... I recommend you never buy used phones.

    Not even close to accurate.

I've bought used phones a few times.
Always bought off adverts and only from users with at least a 20+ positive rating. As long as you're careful you're far less likely to get stung.
I'd rather pay an extra €50 to someone with 20 positive rating than someone with none.

Ive sold all my ex-iphones on adverts. Buyers generally have a good look and test of the phone, one of 2 have had check lists they got online they work through to make sure they are happy. Worth looking something like that up.

    +1

I’ve sold every one of my old iPhones on adverts. I’ve also sold my families iPhones through there too as they can be traced back to original purchase.

Adverts is the way to go with regards buying iPhones, iPads or any other phone or tablet to be honest.

Have you any proof in writing as to where this is stated? You’re 100% wrong

    From Apple website:
Under Irish consumer law, consumers are entitled to a free of charge repair or replacement, discount or refund by the seller, of defective goods or goods which do not conform with the contract of sale. These rights expire six years from delivery of the goods

Thats not Apple warranty. Thats the Sale of Goods Act. You may have to go to court to get that enforced, if you had a case. If you bought it from a retailer other than Apple it is them you would have the case against, not Apple.

As mentioned I got a 3 year old iPhone replaced under this. Took 5 mins on the chat and 1 week to get a replacement.

That’s not a warranty. You should read up what constitutes a warranty and what European consumer law is

It’s not a warranty. It’s not from Apple.

The important part you failed to quote:
Under Irish consumer law, any defect or non-conformity of goods with the contract which becomes apparent within 6 months of delivery are presumed to have existed at the time of delivery. After the expiry of this 6 month period, the burden to prove that the defect or non-conformity of goods with the contract existed on delivery generally shifts to the consumer.

Don’t mislead people to believe their device is covered for 6 years. That’s just the claim period. Massive difference.

You’d have a very hard time proving a hardware fault existed at time of sale if it only shows up 3, 4, 5 or 6 years down the line - especially when you’re dealing with your point of sale.

It may be easier to make that claim through Apple but they need to be your original point of sale.

And what’s even more bizarre is you’ve suggested it to someone considering to buy a second hand phone. Consumer Law doesn’t apply to them.

I am protected with some other law, if the Consumer Law does not apply in this case?
