Painting Skirting: Egg Shell Finish

    Hi all,

Painting skirting boards, they are years old but have never been painted or treated.

I want to paint them with white egg shell finish. Do they need a primer/wood knot treatment or can the egg shell go striaght on the wood?

    Thanks

treat knots, then hit with adhesion primer, then two top coats of eggshell

  • Thanks Dok golf.

Another question or two if you don't mind. : )

I'm repainting wooden floor boards with water based egg shell finish. Would the boards need to be primed before repainting?

Same with wooden stairs that had been painted with stair/floor paint. Is it necessary to prime before painting?

    Many thanks

Just to say water based on floor, no way! Make sure the floor is spotless, use oil based prime and finish.

Thanks Owenb. Interesting you should say that. At the time when I painted them I was recommended water based as it was quicker drying than oil. It worked very well. The floors had significant foot fall as it was in a bedroom and on a landing.

But at the time there was some debate over water based v oil based egg shell finish. I've never had any problems with them.

  • @Owneybaloney.

I just checked and it was oil based eggshell that I used with primer. Although a painter I was chatting to had recommended water based.

Chauncey, I think oil is always preferable to water based, in my opinion. It is much more hard wearing. I find water based paint has generally poor coverage. Water based? Maybe in a few years it will have improved.
