I’m currently in my third year of computer networks and systems management degree, with this year we are to do 6 months placement within a IT company. I’ve been looking everywhere online to see what companies within Ireland take undergrads for 6 months placement but I keep coming to a dead end where most information is very vague. Does anyone know of what companies would hire students for placement? I would greatly appreciate it thank you!

It’s probably the sort of placement you would get through word of mouth. Ask your family and friends if they can recommend any suitable companies. Your tutors should also have a list of previous companies locally that have offered placements.

If I were you I would contact companies directly.

Let's say you wanted to work in IT Security.

Look online for IT Security roles. Apply with a cover letter stating you are a student looking for a 6 month placement, and would love to work in this role in a junior capacity for 6 months, etc.

Of course most of the companies won't be interested, but a few might, or they might think "oh we could use this fella for this junior x position we want to fill".

    Good luck.

What University or College are you going to?

Most of the bigger IT companies would recruit and take people in placements with a view to creating a stream of graduates once they graduate and would have specific folks assigned to university relations.

I worked for free on mine 5 years ago and it teaches you a lot about life and that money should not just be handed to you.

I started on min wage in IT and it paid off in the end for me as well.

i completely disagree of course, all workers should be paid, including interns, its called respect. yes of course young students learn a lot by doing such work, but employers shouldnt be encouraged not to pay such workers, as they truly gain from it

Well I didn't mind working for free it was a small business who let go nearly 15 staff the year before and it was 2013 different times in Ireland were jobbridge was must new jobs in the country.

I didn't care I didn't get paid I learned a lot on my work placement and it helped me get a job after college.

I was working my internship and my normal job at the same time. How do you say it it tought me that in life things are not handed to you and you need to work for them.

Thia is a problem with must people in there late teens and 20s they think everything should be handed to them and be earning nearly 40k out of college?.

Are you sure you need to get this placement yourself? Normally colleges/universities that have this as part of the degree in 3rd year run a placement system in conjunction with employers to put students in jobs.

The market has shifted quite a bit in favour of the person looking for employment rather than the employer in the type of degree the OP is doing. Most placements are actually hard fought by employers to take graduates for these placements in IT and pay well.

There's so many companies that look for interns for 6 months. I was in third year last year and just finished mine at Bank of America. Your college will probably work with the companies and you'll just apply to them through your college and then do an interview. The interview depends on the company, could be technical or competency based. Mine was technical, but it's not too difficult. I wouldn't worry about it, just be confident in the interview is the most important thing. Most pay quite well too, more than an average job you'd be working in college anyway.
