Starting a new job in a couple weeks and I will be in the IT department, its a rollout across the office.I will be on there as a contractor and was emailed by the recurter about the attire is to be smart business. My understanding is that is suit and tie.
I questioned her about it saying its very impractical as I will be carrying a lot equipment across the office, maybe up and down stairs
I am thinking maybe jumper/shirt and cargo/snickers pants and maybe shoes or work boots for ankle support.

Even polo shirt and chinos would be ok but a suit has to be out of the question.
Does anyone have experience with this as I dont think I would wear a suit all day doing this type of work.

She then said that sounds good when I put that to her and now not sure what do as I want to make a good first impression.

Suit sounds like overkill. I'm usually in a polo shirt and jeans and runners. 😀 First day play it safe, polo shirt and chinos should be fine, especially for a contractor.

All the IT staff in my company wear suit pants and shirt
    No tie
    No jacket
Would you consider that? Might be more of what there looking for , after the first day you’ll get the idea of the dress code anyway

I was onto a guy that works at a different plant and he said cargo pants and shirts/polo shirts/ and they give there own safty boots.

I have no problem with the suit but I thought it was a bit ott

Suit is ott. You don't want to come across too different! Just smart dress. I can't see any problem with that. Focus on the job and not the clothing. Anybody who says otherwise is a bit off the mark IMHO.
