Agreed to get an internal renovation of my home with a builder. 2 walls being knocked. He has asked me to get an engineer to spec the 2 RSJs/steel. Is this normal or should he deal with engineer? Does anyone know(recommended) a good/reasonabley priced engineer that could do this. I'm in a very standard 4 bed semi. Any help appreciated, Cheers

The only person qualified (and insured) to design and select the size of the steel beam is an engineer.

It speaks well for your builder that he informed you of this rather than just sticking one in.

Try to get someone fairly local and make sure to ask from some sort of cert/letter to confirm he sized the beam so you can have it in future is anyone asks (e.g. If you are selling).

as above and you need him to see it all in place before it gets fireproofed etc
Its not enough for an engineer to say its a 914 by 305 by 200 [Just kidding with the size :)]: the installation needs to be supervised, as well as the supporting of the remaining walls before the bottom part gets removed

PM me, I will give you a quote for sizing the beam and inspection.
