That’s what I was thinking but the tyre man was saying matigor are better than Firestone ? Find that hard to believe

Is there a big difference between the quality of Bridgestone and Firestone ?

I had Kingstar tyres on a car once and they were good. Just looked them up and they are made in Holland by the same company that make Hankook.
As others said go with Firestone, if your on a budget then the Kingstar might be next best, I've never even heard of the other ones.

No.Not huge.I always found firestone to have a bit of a harder compound. But they are far far better than anything else on the list.I would be happy to pay 25% more than the others for them.

Challengemaster is spot on.The margin is waaayyy bigger on Chinese tyres and unrecognised brands,a lot of tyre places would be more eager to sell you those as a result, sadly.

Tyre brand is one thing, the model is more important.
Find out which model you are looking at and size and see what other consumers have to say about them.

As has been said above steer clear of the Chinese shíte, these 4 patches of rubber are what keep you out of the ditches.

Another option is to buy the tyres online from one of the many reputable places and get them fitted locally. Last month I got 4 (225/40/18) Continental PremiumContact 6 for 375 online, fitted and balanced for 50. These would be one of the best tyres in their category at the moment.

Are Firestone not branded Chinese tyres in a way? Thought I saw someone mention they rebrand as a generic tyre.

As mentioned above though the model of tyre matters a lot. A lot of tyre manufacturers have good and bad tyres so it's important to narrow it down.

Buy the most expensive tyres you can.

Yep, and the problem with tyres is image.
The cheapest ****tiest rock hard zero-grip tyre looks pretty much exactly the same as the high end griptastic ones.
They just aren't sexy for most people and that's why people go into a tyre dealers and ask for the cheapest ones that will fit their car.
Only people who like driving and know the difference between an OK tyre and a good tyre will bother to fit the pricier ones even though in wet braking tests the difference can be as much as 10m between the best and worst on test.
That's a lot of energy carried when you consider that a largish car is roughly 5m in length.
I know buying tyres is a large outlay for round black rubber but in an emergency braking situation in the rain paying a little more for rubber that stops you more than two car lengths sooner is very cheap insurance in my book.

Was in a Dublin city centre tyre place on Wed and there was an 181 Megane hire car with bloody Sava's on the front and Conti's on the rear! Whatever about individual owners not understanding the value of good tyres I can't understand a hire car company skimping on tyres

The other ones are "Matador" not "Matigor" .... and guess what, they are made by the company that make "Continentals"

S**te tyres are S**te tyres , regardless if your try to justify them by being good because theare made by the same company that makes [insert reputable brand of tyre here]

Very Sorry for jumping on board this post, but I'd really appreciate, if anyone could give me a name of a reputable online tyre site, plus when searching sites it asks, summer winter or all weather. I take it all weather, tyre is the one to buy,

    Thanks

I have used Eiretyres, Oponeo and Tyreleader which I have found to be all good.
The cheapest that I have used is Tyreleader which are appreciably cheaper than the other two sites. There is also Tyres-pneus but I have no experience with them.
I recommend all weather tyres and will shortly be fitting a set to my wifes car, Nexen N-Blue scored very highly in one of the ADAC tyre tests and are very well priced.

Sorry again for jumping on post, but if someone could shed some light on this it'll be great, My Car is a 152 C4 grand Picasso tyre size 205 55 R17, now 2 of my friends have the same model ones 141 the other is 162, There tyre sizes are 205 60 R16, the reason I'm asking the question is when searching on line there seems to be more available choice for the R16, size, and I don't understand why my car seems to have the bigger wheel. any information on this would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

Tyreleader, where cheap, delivery is quick, no complaints from me. There is the odd review that customer service is rubbish etc.. Over all it was smooth for me, shipping is via DPD. I got 4 Dunlop Blu Response Tyres from them for 225 local place, doing fitting, balancing and removal of old for 55 so in total €280 for an A/A rated tyre, 1 place locally wanted 400€ fitted another was 530€ fitted.

Read up on reviews, know the tyre your buying, what you need the tyre for, do you need to spend extra on XL, is the speed rating important to you like are you really ever going to do 280, as it costs extra, summer or winter or all season. Mine are summer, considering we only get the temps required for winter a few times a year, but I will be getting a winter set anyway. Find out about ratings on the tyre for the size of tyre as they change from size to size.

I just wouldn't want to be the one testing the cheap stuff, yeah it could be fine and as good as the premium established brands or it could be awful, but when the situation comes that you need to stop, it a real life situation and not some test situation, lives on the line and your depending on the tyre to do it's work and stop the car quickly and as safe as it can.
