hi there im wondering could anyone give me some help. My sister was in a long term relationship and has recently broke up. she is in her early 40's with a 5 year old little boy. she is now living with my parents. she wants to get her own place and she currently works 24 hours a week. Would she be eligable for the HAP scheme or any help with rent as she wouldnt be able to afford to meet the high rents people are charging by herself. Does anyone know would she qualify or what she nees to do? thanks for any help.

She would need to go to her local authority (LA) and apply for social housing (this can take awhile to process) but once approved she will need to complete a HAP application form Part A & return to the council.

    > At this stage she will also need to have found a rental house and get the landlord to complete the part B. (Usually this would be done after she would move into the house but she should check with the LA that her application is pre-approved before moving in)

You can find the rental limits for your local authority online.
    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/housing/renting_a_home/housing_assistance_payment.html

if the proposed rent is equal to or less the rent limit. she will need to pay a contribution to the council.

If the proposed rent is higher, she will need to pay a contribution to the council & the different between the rental limit and actual rent to the landlord.**

** This use not be allowed, and in some local authority it may still not be allowed, she will need to check this with her LA, but I think most accepted that rents have gone above the rent limits by now
