White Sand/Cement Render

Looking for any information/experience anyone may have with white sand/white cement render as I’m currently considering exterior finishes.

Specifically can you use white sand/cement on the finish coat and plastering sand/regular cement on the scud and scratch?

Any idea what kind of a colour would result from a regular plastering sand/white cement mix? (some kind of brown/grey?!) is there other ways to achieve decent coloured finishes with sand and cement? (I’m not interested in monocouche)

What are your thoughts on waterproofing? Finish coat only, scratch only or both? Any highly recommended additives (waterproofs, plasticises and retards)

Adding lime to the finish coat instead of plasticiser? Both?

Anyone know any suppliers of white sand in Munster?

Note: I realise I’ll have to talk to my plasterer but I’d prefer to do that armed with information. Any finishes will be subject to my planning permission.

Any links to pictures would be great and any info at all would be appreciated! :) Apologies for all the questions in the post! :D

Speak to a plasterer who has already done one, most will be happy for you to view their work. I can recommend you a guy here in the North East but thats not much use if your down in Kerry. I couldnt speak highly enough of him!

I did similar, Wicklow white granite sand which has a sparkle to it which looks amazing in the sunlight. 22mm build up of normal scratch coat with final coat applied on top.

With regards to planning permission once its noted as a white/render finish the final product or application can be decided closer to the time.

Most sand/gravel/garden centres can get you the Wicklow white granite. Best to buy by the ton bag for cleanliness on site. Its very important that some test samples are applied first with the mixing quantities carefully noted.

That's great info Miller, really appreciate the reply. Just to clarify though, are you saying that the scratch coat is normal plastering sand with regular grey cement?

I hadn't really though of garden centres to be honest! My local quarry doesn't do it and didn't offer an sources for it either!

Yes the scratch coat is a normal build up with regular grey cement.
