Selling car for scrap

So recently a car I had broke down , head gasket went , insurance company towed it to a tyre garage . I knew it wasn't fixable so rang around scrap yards, who was interested.

Agreed a price with a crowd. It took him a week to collect it, and the garage were contacting me trying to say it was taking up space , hurry it up . Totally resonable.

Anyway, I needed to call in and get my money off the dismantler, I only got a chance to do it yesterday .

Funnily enough the car was right beside the workshop when I arrived.

He started saying it had been stripped by the time he got it . Fuel syphoned, seat belts taken , ignition taken, all fuses and how he had been ripped off, alternator gone he showed me the insides.

I entertained him to a degree , he blamed the tyre garage where it was left.

Anyway it wasn't my fault and he was playing me. I finally got the agreed price. But left with a sour taste in my mouth. Is this how some of these places operate ?

Unfortunately you can't trust anyone in these circles

He was playing you - attempting to get money off.

He wouldn't have taken the car if it didn't suit him. These guys are shrewder than most.

Yes good point, I am glad I stood my ground, he sounded very convincing and I would say many people would fall for it, he gave it all this

"I've been in this business years" and garages are always doing this, I asked him to explain what a Tyre garage could possibly want with seat belts from an old car. To lift things he said.

    Anyway.

60 euro for an 04 Astra .That was after lots of discussions with car dismantlers. Most people offered to pick it up for free and scrap it , wouldn't offer me anything .

So I went for 60 euro and even that was a battle to get.

Im getting 60 euro a tonne for my 05 old ford focus.
It still runs so it feels like a shame but its too expensive to keep repairing & taxing!

    What's wrong with it?

since he is a bit shady

    what you do with logbook?
was it agreed to scrap it? if so certificate of destruction?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 250 ✭✭Steviesol

Logbook is in the glove box.

He said he will send out a cert of scrap. But I don't believe him.

But I mean what can he do with it ? That will have me liable for anything, considering he has ripped everything out of it ?
