    iphone 6. latest ios 11.4.1

total all the messages is just under 600mb, can add it up in the storage check in whatsapp

But if I go to iphone settings, storage > whats taking space, it says whatsapp is using 2.3gb.

    130mb is the app
    2.2gb is documents

thats 1.6gb that I cant account for between what the ios thinks whatsapp is using and what whatsapp thinks it has. Any ideas

Ive only got a 16gb iphone so space is a premium

Just wondering are you including “archived” messages?

yeah, had swiped down and 0 archived. I posted on apple and whatsapp support with screen shots. noones replying on it.

Ive had the phone for a while so had regularly been looking in there, this was a problem that only started recently, the numbers had always matched, seems to have coincided with me recently updating to latest ios minor release so possibly related.

turn off the iCloud back up for whatsapp and then turn it back on a few mins later. It may be picking up the back up size from previous.
I find I have to do this every now and again with my photos especially if i've just done a clear out.

    had checked. not backing up.

whatsapp > settings > chats > chat backup
    last backup : Never
    Auto Backup: Off

    Also
Save to camera roll : Off

I reset the phone again last night, restored from a backup. No difference.

I may try again tonight but just delete group messages in whatsapp and see whether one of the group chats has an issue. restore from backup after.

small update, I decided to test a hunch.

I checked iOS reported whatsapp size. 2.6gb

From whatsapp, go to storage, go into several chats, deleted 200mb worth of old media files.

Straight back to iOS and its now saying whatsapp size is 2.68gb 80mb higher.

Its like the delete is not only not freeing up space its adding to it.

Id be interested to see if anyone else could test that?

Whatsapp support have come back in the meantime to ask about if I was using iCloud which as per above Im not. I reported above to them anyway, will see what they say

    Could you delete and reinstall?

I wiped the phone and reinstalled from a backup to try this(twice) but storage usage came straight back. The last thing I can try is to backup whatsapp messages to the cloud and delete only the app, reinstall and restore messages.

I sent latest screenshots of it to whatsapp in support call. Current total is 475mb of all messages in whatsapp yet iOS thinks 2.6gb is being used.
