My partner and I are currently struggling to pay rent where we live (Kildare), he works a full time job and makes about 400 a week including fis at the moment and we have two kids, we were just wondering if we would be entitled to HAP allowance to help us with rent ?? I always thought if you were working you wouldn’t be entitled to it but as I’m out of work at the minute we only have one income and a friend of mine said we would be entitled to it....if anybody could help me with some information on it that would be a huge help, tia.

You are entitled but check to see if your Landlord will agree to accepting it. His property will be subject to inspection. If he cannot afford the repairs HAP demand then you might find yourselves evicted.

I was recently advised by a social housing "expert" that landlords cannot refuse to sign up for HAP if a tenant asks them to as if they do, they can be taken to the WRC for discrimination. :(

"The Equal Status Act was expanded in January last year to prohibit discrimination against people in receipt of HAP or other social welfare payments being provided with accommodation. However, until this case the WRC had not made a determination on whether the new grounds extended protection to existing tenants if they became eligible for HAP during the course of their tenancy.
