    Quite click-baity title there..
Ford Mondeo’s future in doubt as Fusion is axed in US

The long-term future of the Ford Mondeo looks increasingly uncertain after the automotive giant announced plans to drop the popular model's sister vehicle - the Fusion - in the United States, and focus on pick-ups and SUVs in that region instead.

There's piles of them on the road here and the UK. Why would they stop selling it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,470 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Not sure about Europe, but in the U.S. they're definitely dropping it, as well as the Focus. Ford USA only sells trucks / large SUV's now.

I think the Fusion was big on the rental market. But anyway, you won't be seeing any new ones over there from now on.

Heard something on the radio this morning they only sold 50-odd thousand in Europe last year. In it's heyday they were selling 130k a year in the UK alone.

It all started to go downhill when they stopped calling it a Granada

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,369 ✭✭✭ongarite

The large saloon car bar the Germans luxury brands is in big decline in Europe.
    Not unexpected for Ford IMO.

Will Mazda invest big money for small sales of Mazda 6 in Europe. Honda left the market years ago.

The other thread on here today on SUV, crossover's shows the hatred the traditionalist has for them but the paying consumer loves them.

The Scorpio replaced the Granada, and that was axed 20 years ago (as that segment was pretty much dead by then).

    Mondeo replaced the Sierra.

Seen a Granada in Liffey valley yesterday, beautiful car they are, 80's 2.8i ghia so top of the range I believe - they're actually not as big as I remember them, though I was smaller at the time

    It’s because of tariffs.

How many new ones have they sold? Don't forget that the Mondeo man was replaced by the BMW man who is now the SUV man. Cars aren't popular anymore and they make more profit on SUV's so the car will go.

But it looks like it is a none storey anyway

Given that SUV's / crossovers must be more expensive to produce than the equivalent saloon / estate and the SUV / crossover generates a higher profit margin and are more expensive to run people are obviously valuing the advantages of this category of car rather highly given the price premium they are prepared to pay for them.

They're not. Car makers have been open about this from the start. They can sell them at a higher profit margin and make more money.

I would have thought the raw material costs must be higher given that SUVs / crossovers are larger than their equivalent car model? Profit margins are higher because people are currently overawed by the style/practicality of the vehicle class so are prepared to be less price conscious about them that they are for the more traditional car models. The power of marketing!

The crossover Kuga costs a bit more than the platform equivalent Focus, but sells close to Mondeo price, so that's the reason.

There is very little in it really if you think about it. Sheet metal, plastics and slightly raised ride. When buying bulk to build millions of the things (if it's successful) it's a very tiny cost.

I know, I don't get people . . .all the space of the focus, for the price of a mondeo, and the handling and comfort of neither.

I thought they sold like hotcakes, at least over in Europe, but in the US to, having been over there a good few times in the last few years and seeing them quite a bit.

    Ford apparently denied this.
Ford said: “We currently have our strongest-ever vehicle range in Europe. While we regularly evaluate our future product plans based on customer preferences and trends, there are no changes at this time. Mondeo remains a core part of our product line-up in Europe. We have upgrades coming for Mondeo later this year, which will see new powertrains as well as exterior and interior updates as well as enhancements to the Mondeo Hybrid range.

Think they are a very nice car to look at and drive like most Ford's quality a bit dodgy they used to be the darling of company car drivers especially in the late 90s and early 2000s but the boom lead to German premium stuff and the Mondeo got sneered at

    They were!!

That reminds me, where I grew up not many people could afford such cars as the Granada, my memories of Granada 2.8i ghias, escort rs2000, capris and xr2 fiestas come from the older lads stealing them - fords were targeted back then as apparently a key off one pretty much opened and started all the others
