Importing Yaris hybrid

Hi. I'm hoping to go north this week and put a deposit on a 2015 or 2016 yaris hybrid for the wife. The low vrt rate is a major plus and looks like a good saving can be made importing. I had initially looked in Dublin but it doesn't really make sense with the prices quoted in the North. Is there anything particular to look out for in the car when I go to view? Or is there anything else in relation to vrt that I should be made aware of? Thanks.

Check it's got a full dealer service history - if it's been in for the "hybrid health check" every year then the hybrid system warranty can be extended to 10 years (Toyota Ireland will honour this for UK imports).

I'm not aware of any particular issues with these. VRT should be a breeze, as long as you have the full V5 with you (standard procedure when exporting from the UK, make sure they don't try and post it off!).

Thank, will be looking at dealers only so hopefully they know the ins and outs of vrt system. Will ask about battery too. I'm hoping this turns out to be a reliable car, that's one of the wife's main concerns.

Don't assume this, have a look on the main motors forum and their sticky on imports...

Imported a 2012 model from the UK back in July 2016. VRT was 649 euro, iirc. It's mostly paperwork, read the form thoroughly so that you fill it in right before the appointment.

Mine is going well. Passed the NCT twice, including just recently. I've put 20,000 miles (not km) on it to date (had 26k on it when I purchased it).

    Thread here.

They're a lovely little car. Try get the T-Spirit spec.

Maybe head to the UK? Bigger market with possibly cheaper prices.

Also, whether the timing was planned by you or not, but the UK change their number plates at the start of September. So there may be a good glut of 2-3 year old fleet cars coming onto the market in the next week or two.

Thanks but I don't have time to go to the UK. Also, need to have car bought in next 2 weeks really. Looking north a 2016 icon spec would come in around 13500 including vrt. Icon spec looks pretty good too.

NI doesn't have age-related plates (it's closer to our pre-'87 plates). Also, NI is part of the UK ;)

VRT rebate goes in years, so for a two year old car (Oct 2016) you'll get €1,350 off...if its Aug 2016 reg, its in the 3 year old car bracket and you get €1,200. The VRT calculator online automatically adjusts for this.

So for example: if you buy the Yaris for £10k, say €11,500 when converted, this is the 85% value of the car. Then figure out VRT by doing this: (€11500/85%) x 15% = €2029, less VRT rebate (€1200 for 3 years old), total VRT is €829.

Now do have a look at the various model variants on the VRT calculator as these can be cheaper and you might get to agree a few quid off on an appeal. I've only appealed once for the 4 different cars I've imported over the years.
