Irish Rail - breaking journeys

    Hi all

    Just a quick one.

If I buy a ticket from Cork to Waterford, and want to get off at Dublin instead, obviously I can just leave the station at Dublin.

But, if I book a ticket, such as Waterford to Cork, which includes a change in Dublin, can I start my journey in Dublin instead of Waterford? As in, can I print my Waterford to Cork tickets in Dublin stations and will the barriers let me through, even though I haven't gone through Waterford station?

    Thanks!

Online tickets cannot be broken, you can however print at any station. The barriers will unlikely let you through without getting staff to open because Dublin Heuston isn't printed on ticket.

FYI using it as a cheaper option will quickly be closed off.

How is it a cheaper option?

Prices are based on distance, online fare for Waterford-Cork via Dublin is cheaper than Dublin-Cork. They will just adjust the journey planner to not show via Dublin if they see sudden interest in such a routing.

Would be nice if Irish Rail at least tried to be competitive with Aircoach/BE on the Cork to Dublin City route. They are currently double the price each way!

It's actually cheaper to book a ticket from Waterford to Cork than it is a ticket from Dublin to Cork so I know well what your game is here :) The barriers at Heuston won't allow you through with a ticket that isn't booked to begin at Heuston, and the checkers who can override them will almost certainly not let you through without said ticket either.

Alternatively just stalk someone through the barriers or if you have have a leap card try and touch out and if it doesn't work say you touched in at Parkwest. Another thing you could say is your bursting to use the jacks or you want a supermacs can't deny your human rights to a piss and taco chips :)

You won't push your way behind a legitimate ticket holder. The gates are always staffed and are well used to that stunt. Claiming that you went for food for the loo, well where's your ticket and why hasn't it been validated? :)
