    hi

does anyone have a roof with a 17ft span, and if so, what size timber beams would a guy need to span this lenght . .. just for a normal galvanised roof on a lean to shed.

I think you would be better looking at steel. When wood was used for large spans like this it was made from several planks supporting each other. This is not so practical for lean-tos as you more than likely lack the head room required.

If it is for your "project" your college library will have Eurocode 5 which stipulates the member sizes for roof joists etc..

Outside my knowledge and experience, I'm sorry. Best consult builder.

    +1
This is part of he OP’s college course. It’s not an actual project. Furthermore, the OP is studying a construction course, not an engineering course so then the sizing of actual members would and should not be covered by the saloon that course except for standard items, timber span guides for example.

Engineering design is best left for the engineers, even for college projects.
