I'm taking my fathers car from him as he is buying a new one.

His car is registered/taxed as a hackney.

Do I need to do anything bar send of the log book?

    Thanks

It changes to private on change of ownership AFAIK.

Do we have to pay the difference in road tax?

The tax isn’t valid if it’s not registered as a PSV. They don’t look for the disc back so...

So leave it and when its up for tax again it will be private tax?

If you are changing it to private then the taxi disc won't be valid.
You need to hand it over with the log book and buy private motor tax .
AGS look dimly on cars that have a fraudulent tax disc.
If you do it at the MTO they can give you a new disk at the desk. Will get the log book in a few days. You could post it to the MTO as well.

So we have to fork out 200e for a tax disc when we take it over even though there's tax on it?

    Correct.
The current tax is for a taxi. You will not be a taxi.

Are you saying the OP can’t just do a change of ownership by post then?

You need to read the last line of my post for your answer:)
Post it to the MTO. Its generally faster.

But there’s nothing stopping the OP sending it to Shannon, and they won’t ask for the disc back. Right/Wrong?

Nothing stopping him sending it to Shannon but the local MTO is dealing with smaller quantities of post and generally quicker.
They'll also call you if you've given a mobile should there be a query instead of just rejecting it and posting it back to you.

Can confirm, having bought an extaxi, it does not.

I received the log book in my name and the taxation class is down as taxi.
The car is gone into storage now so I havent bothered changing the class yet but I believe you have to change the car to your name, get the book, then complete a different form to change the taxation class.

FYI - the tax is still valid until you change the taxation class on the book so I wouldnt bother doing the changeover until the existing disc is nearly out!

Will it not automatically change when the tax is up and I buy new tax?

    No.
And you will not be able to buy new tax without completing the form.
You cannot tax a car with taxation class as taxi without a PSV license, and you cannot tax a car as private unless the correct taxation class is listed on the VLC

TLDR you need to fill out form RF111 before taxing the car as private. You *may* be able to do both at the same time by going to your local tax office.

Is the VLC the 2 page document with the name and address on with the vehicle spec on that you send off to change ownership?

Unless I wasn't clear or it makes a difference, I will be doing a change of ownership

    Yes

Doesnt make a difference, you need to do the taxation class change anyway, it's a separate process to changing owner
