Can I work while waiting for DA (disability allowance)

I was confined to the house for the past year, last weeks I was only well enough to go apply for any entitlements.

I was advised to apply for DA. I have done so. The problem is I need to feel better about myself and applying for a few hours of work a week would help me get out there again. It would be extremely difficult for me, but I want to try. I am in no way able for full time work right now, that would exacerbate my condition to the hilt, and cause me serious damage.

So my point is can I busy myself with doing something a few hours a week or not? And will it affect my application? I don't just want to sit around aimlessly in a depression. I do have a serious condition but am not willing to succumb to it as I did in the past.

Part of the application process for DA is assessing your ability to work, so you should wait until your claim has been fully processed & in payment before attempting to get approval from DSP for ANY sort of work (that includes unpaid voluntary work or paid/unpaid rehabilitive work).
