    Hi there,

We small group of friends are travelling to Budapest (Hungary) for 4 days in 2 week of October and going to book hotel near City Centre?

Could you please suggest what can be seen in these 4 days in and around Budapest city. Would there be worth to hire a car during this visit and park at hotel?

Would public transport be cheaper to travel within Budapest city and aroud?
Any other tips would be highly appreciated regarding food, shopping (if cheaper than Dublin), Amusement places etc.

    Regards.

Stayed at a fantastic AirBnB close to city (and right beside a Metro / Tram - tram is being worked on at the moment, but there's a replacement bus instead). Must check with the mods if I can recommend.

Public transport is affordable and I found it very easy to get around. The Hop On Hop Off tour is a very good way to get around and hits the major sites (went this summer and the Opera house is being renovated, so unfortunately you can't see it).

Didn't do any shopping, I'm afraid.

Prime Steakhouse well recommended for food. Ribs were amazing and steak too (they have varying quantities available - you could end up with a slab!  :D) . If you have a sweet tooth, you have to check out the Sugar Shop (Paulay Ede u. 48) off Andrassy Avenue and we also had dessert at Gerbaud, which was great. Had a nice brunch, but need to look up name of place again (though if you're in a group it's a little problematic). Thought New York Cafe was a bit overrated - place looks amazing, but food was...fine.

Would definitely recommend the baths. If you don't have great weather, there are plenty of indoor mini pools, saunas, steam rooms, but the large swimming pools are outside.

No need for a car IMHO for Budapest. The public transport system is among the best I've ever experienced. There's a 24 hour group travel card, for up to 5 people that is great value.

    https://bkk.hu/en/budapest-24-hour-group-travel-card/

We were only there for less than 48 hours. Four days would make things much more leisurely. We stayed in the Art'otel on the castle side, on the banks of the Danube & the view was spectacular - https://www.artotels.com/budapest-hotel-hu-h-1011/hunbuart

    Highlights of our visit, in no particular order;

Rudas Baths - Can do dinner & late night baths, including a rooftop hot tub - http://www.rudasrestaurant.hu/english/
Andrassy Avenue - Main avenue from city centre to Heroes Square. Book Café along here is stunning (EDIT: Seems to have closed). Lots of designer shops if that's your thing.
Fisherman's Bastion & Castle area - Get there early to avoid the worst of the crowds.
    Funicular to/from Castle district - https://www.bkv.hu/en/buda_castle_funicular_/
Danube Cruise - Cruise only (with a drink) or cruise with dinner.
Zeller Bistro - Has enlarged & relocated since we were there but was an amazing dining experience - http://www.zellerbistro.hu/en/
    St. Stephen's Basilica
    Chain Bridge, especially at night
    Ruin pubs

Didn't get to see inside the Parliament Building but had intended to & would recommend you prebook if at all possible. If not then at least see it from across the Danube at night.

Didn't get the time but really wanted to visit the Terror House - http://www.terrorhaza.hu/en

For something a bit different food wise try - http://hachapuri.com/en/home/

Definitely try to learn a few words of Hungarian. Practically everyone under 35 speaks near-perfect English but even just the bare basics (hello/goodbye/thank you) are appreciated.

Had a fabulous Thai foot massage near our central accommodation (Holo Utca) a couple of years ago. Only discovered it on our last day, but there are loads of places around there.

It was incredibly cheap - about 20 euro equivalent - and, in addition to the hot baths, was the highlight of our visit. I'd go back for either in a heartbeat.

Brilliant Airbnb’s available in great historical buildings right in the middle of Pest. We had an amazing stay in one for €80 a night. We have also stayed in 5 star hotels in Budapest but they were as good as you will get but at high cost. Would never stay in hotel again after Airbnb experience. Our son is studying there so have visited many times. Great public transport definitely do not hire a car, roads are gridlocked.
