Ok, it's the Sun, so don't hold that against me... it randomly appeared in my newsfeed (I swear!).

    https://www.thesun.ie/news/3022593/senator-cork-leinster-house-electric-car/

Ok, he highlights the lack of infrastructure but otherwise had a pretty ideal journey... stopped for a 20 minute charge on the way and he didn't encounter a queue at the FCP.

Ironically my biggest issue with this is that he is incentivised not to use public transport. A round trip from Kinsale to Dublin can net him as much as €400 in mileage (284km each way at 70c per km... a rate he's on once he's done 3 round trips to Dublin (i.e. 1500km+ in a year)). If he used public transport he'd just get the cost of his bus and/or train ticket.

Is mileage that high? I thought it was like 30c per km?

38c for the first 1500km, 70c from 1501 to 5,500km... meaning that even at the low rate he's getting around €215 per round trip.

It’s actually higher a 1.5l+ will get you 83.5c/km for mileage between 1500-5500km the first 1500 is At 47.5c

    And it’s tax free

Electric cars go on the lowest cc rate for mileage though.

    44 to 1500km
    83 1500 to 5500km
    33 5500 to 25000km
Eh 24 or so after that

I do huge mileage on those rates or there abouts
Only covering you really once you're doing over 10000km for work
But nice if you never go over the 5000km

The 2.0 litre rates btw I'll have a look at others

I think the Leaf is on the "up to 1200cc" rate.

Rates are well down from when I was in the PS... I was getting €1.27 per mile in a 1.6 litre for the first 4000 miles. Several of my office co-workers used to fly to Cork and back in the one day but claimed they drove and stayed overnight the night before and the night after.

There’s making unnecessary journeys which is taking the piss and there’s fraud.
Your co workers are commiting the latter

Ex co-workers. I don't work there any more. And yes, that level of dishonesty didn't sit well with me. Personally I only claimed for what I was used to claiming for, which was the bare minimum. I was once reprimanded by accounts for not claiming enough... I used to travel to remote offices on my own time as mileage more than made up for it, but accounts told me I should be claiming overtime too.

At least it highlights what all of us already know... the infrastructure is one of the biggest issues.

Seems a reasonable article to me and its good when someone inside government experiences things first hand. He will have a better idea what he is talking about when he is on his committee.

Is there a link to the video anywhere? I couldn't find it in the article, maybe it's there and I just don't see it

I wonder what Ivor Callely would make of the drive :)
