    Hi guys,

i really need your help! My son is looking to build his own gaming pc and has given me a list of components, so that we can buy parts for his birthday/christmas etc.

I'm just looking to see what you think of his spec. I'm also thinking of upgrading some of the parts, which i've put in brackets, so any suggestions there would be great. So here goes...

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 6-core
    (Upgrade to AMD Ryzen 7 1700 8-Core?)

    GPU: MSI Geforce GTX 1050TI
(Upgrade to MSI Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 3GT OC)

    Motherboard: ASUS Prime B350-Plus DDR4
(Upgrade to ASUS ROG STRIX B360-F)

    Memory: Ballistix Sport 8GB DDR4 RAM 2400

    Storage: A55 256GB Silicon Power

    Hard Drive: 1TB Seagate Barracuda

    Power Supply: EVGA 500W PSU

    Case: Aerocool Cylon

He already has monitor, keyboard and gaming mouse. So is it just Windows that we will need to get everything up and running, or is there more that he's not realised? I'm totally clueless, so any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

Ryzen 1600 is fine, newer version available - the 2600 - though the 1600 is cheaper and still a good CPU so it's fine.

Think at the moment Amazon have the 1700X 8-core for just £149 so at that price, yes, worth getting as it's the same almost as the 1600x.

Your 2nd motherboard choice is better for overclocking but I think at that point you're nearly spending more on the board than the CPU? If not overclocking, a more basic €75 B350 will serve your needs fine.

Graphics card it is worth getting the 6GB 1060 or 8GB RX570/580 as the 3GB 1060 model will limit it badly going forward, though if the budget cannot stretch it is a much better option than the 1050Ti 4GB.

Look at getting faster DDR4 ram, and also SSD's are so cheap now, no need to go for a budget model over a Samsung or Crucial model for a few pounds more.

Zero reason not to go NVME.

The Ryzen 7 1700X is currently £210 on amazon, and the 1600 & 2600 are both £150. So do you think it would be best to go for the 2600 and use the money saved there to upgrade the GPU?

Amazon have the Gigabyte GTX1060 G1 Gaming V2 6GB GDDR5X PCI Express Graphics card for £260, so would that be a better buy?

It’s £85 for the Prime B350-Plus and £110 for the ROG STRIX, so not a huge difference between them but I’m happy enough to go with the B350-Plus if you think that would do the job, as I very much doubt he’ll be overclocking.

    So here’s the revised parts:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 6-core 19MB Cache, 65W with Wraith Stealth Cooler.
    GPU: Gigabyte GTX1060 G1 Gaming V2 6GB GDDR5X PCI Express Graphics card
    Motherboard: ASUS Prime B350-Plus DDR4

Any suggestions for the memory, storage and hard drive? What speed would you advise? Is the 8gb RAM enough?

Is the power supply and case ok?

Just seen that the Ryzen 1700x is still available for £150 on scan, so will go for that.

Also just seen this offer on scan for £260:

    6GB MSI GeForce GTX 1060 6GT OCV1 GPU 1544/1759MHz Core/Boost + 240GB Kingston A400 2.5" SATA SSD 500/350MB/s Read/Write

    Is that any good?

The 1700X was £149 yesterday, must have just been for the day. The 1600 is £135 though right now. 8GB ram is plenty, minimum of 2400Mhz, faster ideally but whatever is affordable is fine as 2400mhz is still very fast.

Yes that seems a good deal for £260 for both the SSD and card.

It’s around £775 including delivery to Ireland, which will work out about €860.
