What are some of your favorite flags?

Vexillology is the study of flags and I find it can be interesting enough. Even the whole fleg carry on in Northern Ireland gor plenty of people talking. What are some of your favorite flags out there? Which international flags do you think look cool or stylish? Are there any that irk you because they're not symmetrical? Any proposed flags you'd like to see come into existence? Do you know any fun facts about any national flags?

The flag of Nepal is a strange one, the world's only non-quadrilateral national flag.

Bikini Atoll, which is part of the Marshall Islands has a rather interesting flag. Apparently, the script is a translation that the USA owes them a massive debt for a lot of nuclear bomb testing from back in the day.

Finally, how about the Celtic Nations flag. The flags of Brittany , Cornwall , Wales , Scotland , Ireland and the Isle of Man. Quite unusual but kind of cool.

Their old imperial flag looked pretty cool I thought. Reminds me of Macedonia's flag today.

Don't give a toss for flags, or any other symbols of nationalism. Far too many people have died fighting over which flag fluttered over their heads.

The Libya flag from 1977 to 2011. The flag was all green to represent Gaddafi's Green Book.

Reminds me of this cartoon...(as well as the Bill Hicks rant about "the freedom to burn the flag").

Here's an interesting one. Haiti and Liechtenstein had the exact same flag as each other but only found out when they both competed at the 1936 Olympic Games. From there, they developed each of their flags a little further with their own emblems representing them a little clearer.

Always liked the EU flag, the stars on the blue background looks nice imo.

Obviously like our Irish tri colour one, and the old one with the harp was very nice too.

That bear one is very bad ass.

    Some US States flags

    Most famously, Texas.

    Texas-Facts.jpg

Hawaii carries the Union Flag despite it never being a part of the empire.

    211-Hawaii-001-M.jpg

Mississippi still has the Confederate cross on its flag which has led to controversy.

    255px-Flag_of_Mississippi.svg.png

Maryland State flag looks like something from a medieval fair.

    md_sflag.jpg

The flag of New York City (not New York State) has orange in it, from it's origins as New Amsterdam and the ties to Holland's House of Orange.

Always liked the novelty of the Nepal flag. The Seychelles flag is eye-catching though!

Tenerife's flag is essentially the same as Scotland's.

    459285.png

    Wikipedia has this explanation:
The flag is similar to the Flag of Scotland in design. The difference is that the Scottish Saltire's field colour is usually approximated around Pantone 300 (azure or sky blue) instead of the Tenerife's darker navy blue field.

There are two popular traditions on the island of Tenerife trying to explain the resemblance of the Flag of Tenerife with the Flag of Scotland.

One is that the flag was adopted as a mark of respect to the bravery of the Scottish sailors in the Battle of Santa Cruz.

An alternative theory is the most influential masters of the island of Tenerife chose a design similar to the Scottish flag belonging to the Masonic Grand Lodge of Scotland and proposed a similar flag for the maritime province of the Canary Islands, which later became the flag of Tenerife.

But I like this alternative story:
They are the same, because Scotland and Tenerife share the same patron saint - Andrew, or, as he's known on the Canary isle, San Andres. The story has it that the saint arrived on the island just as the new wine was being produced. Andres was keen to make a good impression with the locals and took part in the celebrations with gusto, ending up a little worse for wear. While in a drunken stupor, the local children played a joke on him, tying pots and pans to his clothes. Whenever he moved in his sleep, they made an almighty clatter, waking him up. The children, no doubt, thought this extremely funny, but I doubt that San Andres was amused.

Nowadays, on the eve of his saint's day, November 29th, local children collect tin cans of all shapes and sizes, tie them together and drag them through the streets in his honour.

    🤪

Speaking of Scotland, their territory of the Shetland Islands has an interesting flag. It fuses the Scottish flag with Nordic design, both of which they're culturally linked with.

Liked would be a better word. It was good at the start, but never really developed.

.... still you DID recognise it as a Big Bang Theory reference, so...

Always liked the Japanese imperial navy flag.

Our own Starry Plough a good one too(IMHO better than the tricolour)

The Bhutan flag is pretty cool.

It's got a dragon on it. Can't go wrong there really.

    As has the Welsh flag.

Though we've become so used to them they've become ordinary by virtue of recognition, the US and British flags are pretty cool looking too IMHO.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Flag of Leinster is my favourite flag. Wish it was the flag of Ireland it would be very unique and having a musical instrument very appropriate.

I know some people like the blue version too.

I tried to post it and failed so use your imagination!
