    Hey guys,

My girlfriend is starting a course in itTallaght in the end of September it's a full time course and she havsnt told the social welfare about it, would this be an issue??

She is on jobseekers benefit for almost 3 months now and hqs been still actively looking for a job but not found anything due to lack of qualification, hence why she has decided to go back to college, she don't qualify for btea but she has applied for the course herself privately and it's a level 8 degree.

Do you reckon they will cancel her payment or find out eventually if she don't tell them and is it not really that bad as technically sh3 still looking for a full time job as college hours are 9am to 2pm and she is looking to get evening work either way .

She is not working at all so it's her only income. Is it as bad as working while claiming?? Or are they really the same thing?? She is feeling kind of guilty about it and so came to me to ask but I'm really not sure the best thing to do.

    according to their website..
Third-level students cannot claim Jobseeker's Allowance or Benefit while they are studying full-time. This disqualification also applies to the summer holiday periods between academic years (unless you are a mature student or are getting a Back to Education Allowance)

So it looks like it's not allowed. Also isn't there a chance she will be called to take part in seetec or turas nua? which schedule weekly job search appointments at varying times so trying to go to college full time in tandem with this would be difficult. I would also imagine they have ways of checking if Js'rs are in college?

not informing the welfare dept that she is undertaking full time education (yes 9-2 mon to fri is considered full time) is fraud as she will be no longer entitled to the payment while she is undergoing this course.

She can wait to sign off until the day before the course starts but after that im afraid shes not entitled to it anymore

You don't need a qualification to tend a bar or work on a checkout.

I remember this being a common thing in the 80s among students. The various departments were not connected to each other and digitalization was something unknown. So folks got a grant to study and were on the dole at the same time.
In those days the girls from the super market used their lunch breaks to sign on and collect their dole...all in working clothes with the company logo clearly visible. Nobody said a word and everybody was happy...

And today, many of those former dole cheats are raising their children to have the exact same set of ethical values and sense of entitlement as they had back in those halcyon days when cheating their fellow citizens made them happy!

Thanks for the advice guys. Is there a certain way these departments connect with one another?? Like how would the social have access to IT Tallaght??

That said, I guess if she left it last minute like the course does not start until end of September it would be alright, right? Lol

Everything now is linked to her PPSN. She has to give her PPSN in order to enroll in the course and that will alert DSP.

Wait wouldn't she be entitled to more than just job seekers now she's a full time student

Back to education or grant , mature student?

Good thing the DSP know all now or OP's girlfriend might miss out.

This makes no sense at all.

The op states whe was only on jobseekers for 3 months, so no shes not entitled to btea, also no as a full time student in 3rd level you arent entitled to jobseekers.

Grants are not on the dsp, they are on her to find and see if shes eligible.

Mature students can return on lesser fees but unless she qualifies for a grant then no shes not entitled to more now shes going to college
