Why do you want to remove the lichen? It would not be doing any damage to the roof.

Are you talking about lichen or moss?

Because it looks like I have a polka dot roof? :pac:

I found this linked article informative and it does mention some treatments if you do think they are necessary. The fact you have lichens on your roof apparently is a sign you live somewhere with good air quality. I get the impression from what I read that it would be more moss and rooting plants that could cause a structural problem to the roof over time. The article in the link claims "Moss and lichen will reduce the life expectancy of the roof by a few years over a 100-year life expectancy and is therefore negligible.."

I can see how moss could cause issues by disturbing slates, but most lichen would not do any harm I think. There are products for removing lichen, I think it would depend a bit on what kind of roof you have. You would also have to balance the damage potential of climbing on the roof, or of spraying chemicals that could drift onto your garden (and you).
