Is it possible to connect an older Macbook to one of the LG Ultrafine 4K monitors?

I thought using a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter with a Thunderbolt cable would work, but a couple of people have said it may not.

Has anyone experienced a similar setup that can let me know how it worked out for you?

    Thanks!

    Thunderbolt (up to 40 Gbps)
Two Thunderbolt 2 ports (up to 20 Gbps)

Im pretty sure your Macs GPU can't even push 4096x2304, maxes at "4096-by-2160 resolution at 24Hz" though I don't use Macs too often.
