1990s Colnago Master Steel Frameset

    Decent, but not perfect condition.

Approx 1994/1995 Colnago Master Olympic Decor with Chrome Prescia straight blade fork.

53cm top tube (roughly 52cm seat tube). 11cm head tube.

Headset included. Might be able to throw in a pair of Modolo period handlebars if you like (once I take them off one of the other Colnagos).

Was looking for an imperfect master to add to the collection to build as a Neo-classic bike i.e. modern record 11 speed group and other components... I was going to get madclown in limerick (facebook his work).. to do a respray in the classic Saronni colour scheme...

.. However... it is a little big for me, especially compared to the 1983 model parked next to it built with period components.

Also, whilst the paint has a fair few imperfections up close (I have tried to capture this in the pictures).. it has patina, but is hardly a wreck,in fact its quite fetching as a built up bike (also captured in the pictures), so much so that it seems like a crime to strip it down.

Anyway, these go for good money on eBay and various other places.. but I am only looking for 450. Based in Waterford. Could probably post if required.

Using previous owners pics.. but frameset is in the same condition since then... just frame, fork and a headset that I am unsure of the quality/completeness of. Nothing else. Note I don't have any of the carbon forks that are in some of the pictures.

I see it is pictured with a set of easton forks as well - were these yours or the previous owner?

The easton fork was a previous owner who wanted to lighten it up as part of a "neo classic" build. He also had a profile carbon fork with 1 inch aluminium steered. I didn't want them though.. I only took the original chrome fork.. it felt like blasphemy to do otherwise.

Some great YouTube videos on folks building these into neo classic bikes with modern silver campag Athena parts etc... so this was the idea.. but once I had the frameset.. blemished with use marks as is it is.. I found myself unable to butcher it..

    This one for example:

The main issue for me is that the seat tube is a bit too long. Especially compared to my other 2.

    What height it will suit?

I am 5'7. It would fit me with a 100mm stem. Older bikes tend to be taller. I reckon it would be fine for a 5'9 (maybe taller) person depending on how racy you like your fit. I can do exact measurements to compare to your regular bike if required.

I only have the 2 Colnago masters left, plus the spare frame. Only the spare frame for sale at the moment. I sank a fortune in restoring the red one, which I bought as a wreck in Sicily on holiday... and the other one.. thats 100% original.. and one scratch on the rear seat stay aside, its virtually showroom condition. Relatively rare for one of that era... and tough to restore to that condition because the decor paint job is a bugger to recreate perfectly. They'd both be top of the market prices (I mean like 1500+ - not steelvintage.com 3 grand top of the market type prices mind you !) But not for sale at the moment.

No new projects for me until the new year.. but all I am interested in when I look for the next project is anything chromovelato, or high end tomassini etc.... I sort of fancy a Colnago C40 too.. not that retro, but always had a soft spot for them.

Against this frame, I would allow a partial trade in of a crank for one of my modern bikes.. ideally a Rotor 3D30, 3D24, 3DF or Flow with 170mm cranks. Or perhaps Dura Ace. (might consider FSA SLK or above). But thats the only part I need to pick up at present, nothing else is of interest right now.

I completely agree. Built up either as period-correct, or as a neo-retro (which is what I'd suggest), this will be a lovely bike to ride.
