Hi new to forum my question is what's the operating temp for 2011 2.0 d4d avensis
When I plug an obd reader in it says the temp at idle is 95 degrees Celsius but the gauge in the car stays halfway and no fan kicks in is this normal in these engines.

Seems a bit high to me, it's more usual for a diesel to operate at 90 degrees (some petrols would run this hot, and sometimes hotter in an attempt to maximise fuel economy). I'm sure people who know much more about Toyotas than I do will be able to confirm or deny the above.

It's normal in most cars for the gauge to be buffered around the centre these days unfortunately and I believe Toyota buffer the temperature gauge as well.

As captainspeed stated above, most? car maker coolant gauges are "buffered" and I definitely know that VW coolant gauges read spot on 90C between 75C & 107C so something has to go wrong before they are really any use, I've never liked this system but anyway here are the settings for both a 2000 Golf and a 2005 Polo, I have often heard the fan starting up on both with the coolant gauge spot on 90C!.

Thermostat begins opening at 86C. Fully Open at 98C.
The Coolant Temperature Indication is conditioned before display to read a steady 90C between actual coolant temperatures of 75C and 107C.

Fan Speed 1 ON at 92C to 97C. OFF at 91 to 84C.
Fan Speed 2 ON at 99C to 105C. OFF at 98 to 91C.

Fan should be kicking in at idle my 12 diesel avensis fan will kick in after a few mins esp if air con is running.

I think there is a separate (condenser) radiator for the AC with its own fan and this fan is controlled by that circuit and also the discharge pressure from the AC unit.
