I dried off 3 limx cows today. I am going to finish them and two heifers by Mid November. I have loads of haylage fodder. I want to get them up to adlib over the coming weeks once they are dry. Any advise for me. Yes I have finish them one cow has a cyst inside her vulva I can’t sell her so it makes sense to finish them all together. The heifers are around 550 kg they will go with them. All advice welcome

Culls will fatten fairly quick if mealed on grass and id say it would be the safest bet with the heifers too. Thats if you have enough grass in front of you. Ive eight out on grass at the moment with february born calves still suckling them and ive been throwing them 20kg of rolled barley a day for the last forthnight and i may be imagining it but i reckon some are warming up already. Ive another eight with july born calves that ill start mealing in the shed.

Is 2.5kg/head enough to fatten suckler cows?

Cheers for that. I am little tight on grass. I have small west of Ireland farm but I have a lot taken up for reseeding. It makes sense to put them in the shed.

Don’t forget to include the opportunity cost of the hay ledge, good quality bales will be worth a fortune

I’d go with finishing on grass and nuts if at all possible, suckler cows should fatten rapidly once dry

What would be the best nut

    Barley maize meal 50/50

I'd agree with You there, I never finished cows ad lib but imagine they'd eat 15kg per day if they got it. Theyd fatten quick enough outside with a bit of meal and a pick of grass.

Small percentage of Fibre too if on adlib, hulls or a cheaper alternative

It might make financial sense to sell live lads at cows are getting more than the farmer.

Mine are fattening anyway but they are on good grass. It wouldn’t be worth a monkeys in the shed.
