    Hi,
I have to locate an underground plastic water pipe. I am told it is about 3 foot down. Is there any equipment that I can hire to do this?
    Thanks in advance
    S

What size is the pipe ? You can trace pipes and ducts using a device called a sonde which fits on to the end of a cobra reel. It emits a signal which is picked up by a CAT allowing you to trace the route of a pipe while someone feeds the sonde along the inside of the pipe. Most Hire shops have all the equipment but I think the smallest sonde you can get is 40 mm so this might not be suitable for what you need

I'd be amazed if the water pipe was three foot down. Dig up a few feet from where you know it is at each end of the run ( or just the end you know) and keep doing the same increasing the distance between holes if you get confident of where the run is and just elongate you hole if you loose it.

Found a good few pipes like that neighbors which no one could find turned out to be three inches down

There is some listening gear you can get the local council Water Services use it but they are rubbish and can never find anything with it.

You need to open all the taps you can full bore to and then close them down until you make the taps noisy then you can trace better with the listening gear which is really only for leaks.
