    Hi all,
Swapping out my M52 Manifold to an M50 Manifold (E36) and I noticed the M50 has a lot of oily grit in it. Is it worthwhile cleaning out the manifold whilst its not on the car yet? If so, what is the best way to do it?

    Thanks

These chaps seem to do that kind of thing pretty well.

I done it before on a passat at home
Let it soak overnight in petrol
Will break it down for you to clean it out
Be sure to wear gloves and do it somewere thats good to get rid of all the carbon

you could also use mr muscle but its not great stuff if its aluminium
Great stuff though,Again use gloves and glasses and in an open area

You don't say if its the intake manifold or exhaust, both can get pretty disgusting if you have an EGR or crankcase breather back in the intake. Assuming you're talking exhaust though; there are some compelling videos of people using a lot of heat first; mapp torch or hotter, with a blast of compressed air. Then a soak in acetone, petrol, white spirits, any decent solvent, toothbrush to finish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIijYgvxW0g

I did an intake manifold with powerful degreaser and a scraper and ended up blackened and sweaty, If I had to do it again I would give it to a place that does it for a living and let them at it.
Its a messy tiring job and its very difficult to get all the stuff out especially around curves etc. You'd always wonder if there was a big lump of crap that you missed ready to fall and block something.
