I like it. Chops bale up well and makes it easy to fork. Only paid about 1k for it 2nd hand

You can, I split the bale in four and and carry the two sections they can't reach to the next pen.

I make around the same amount of bales per year. I bought a second hand one for 1000 Mchale. No cracks or welds. Honestly it was some of the best few quid I spent. I now can control how much silage the cattle get. Make them clean up everyday before they get more. It only works in an open shed where you can split the bale infront of the whole feeding barrier. No more fat cows. Less silage consumed less silage wasted.

    .

Thanks for the advice. That's one of the reasons I wanted to buy was to reduce waste. I can get in to open bales in front of 3,pens but 2 pens will be at 90degrees to pen.. Or a bit of an angle.
    Still think it worth it

    Hi Patsy
Thanks for the advice. Yes 100% agree with you about the splitter. Best bit of equipment ever to arrive in the yard. Feeding so much easier.

Anyone use a straw chopper/blower as a bale feeder? Any good? Hard to use?

I'd say they'd work even better with non chopped bales, in so far as the blocks that you cut the bale into would hold together better, and be far easier to carry on the prongs if you wanted to lift a section of the bale forward to another pen.

A good tip when lifting a section of a split bale on the prongs is to lower the blade down onto the top of the block of silage. It really helps to hold it together. Also, the splitters come new with only 3 prongs fitted. It is well worth fitting another short prong in the hole provided if you intend carrying sections of the split bale.
