Hi, I'm a sole trader in the private construction industry. Have been doing everything myself but its now got to the point, I'm worked to much and need to take in extra help. I see the min wage is just over 9 euro, is that before or after tax. Can I take someone on as part-time as in maybe 1-3 days and what other things will I be paying on top of the min wage.

First thing is that you'll have to register with Revenue as an employer. Then, on top of wages, you'll have to pay Employer's PRSI (8.6% on weekly earnings up to €376 and 10.85% over €376) for your employee.

You can employ someone for part of a week and the employee can sign on for up to 3 days and get reduced payment from social welfare.

If you're in construction, then I suspect that you'll need to take out some form of accident insurance for your employee too but I'm not aware of the details.

There's a government incentive scheme that pays a grant to employers for taking on employees from the live register - it's called JobsPlus. Check it out!

Think one has to be paying tax for 5 years or more to avail of the job plus and isn't you have to employ them after it runs out.

As for the income tax, prsi and USC, isn't it 20%, 4% and 5% for sole traders.
