Hi all just bought a second hand car (my first ever car) the tax is up however. I haven’t a clue on how to tax it, the logbook has been sent off so what’s next? I tried doing it online but it asks for a pin which I don’t have. If anyone could give me a hand that would be great 😊

You cannot tax as the car registration is not transferred over to you yet. If you request a new PIN now and tax it then the disc will be sent to the previous owner. Keep checking the change of ownership status on the motor tax website, as soon as it shows that ownership has been transferred you can request a new PIN and log in to tax the car. You don't have to wait for the new log book to arrive.

    Hi,

Buying a car out of tax 2 months and I want to tax it asap.
Can I go to the tax office straight away and tax it from this month or would I have to wait till the log book comes back so I dont have back date the tax.

You always pay tax from the 1st of the month you bought it in, so it will be from the start of August.

You could ask seller to tax it I suppose, that's fastest and easiest.

Merging with recent thread on the same topic

The seller isn't going to tax it because they will get stung for the arrears.

That doesnt answer any question here

That doesnt answer any question here

Please read Bikos reply. It answers Biko's suggestion to you above about getting the previous owner to tax the car on your behalf before they sell the car to you. Unless you want to pay the back tax also then it's not an option if you want to tax the car straight away.

Yeah but he didn't really answer my question either, just gave an answer but not directly related to what I actually asked.

I was really asking whether I can take the log book signed to the tax office(assume seller lets me post) showing im the new owner and tax it then? or do I need to wait till its in my name. I think the answer is the latter.

Not sure to be honest, maybe try ringing your local motor tax office and ask them if it can be done that way.
