    HI all,
my mother in law has been off the road for 18months due to ill healt and she now wants to get back on the road. Her car has no tax, nct and she has no insurance. Each these seems to require one or the other before the other can be got? in that the car cant be driven to the nct without tax and insurance, she cant get tax without insurance and she cant get insured in a car with no tax or nct...
any help on this would be great. Car also needs to be brought to the mechanics for a once over prior to being NCT'd
    thanks

back of a tow truck to mechanic and to nct. Tax the car with 1111111111 as the insurance policy number...makes no difference....Then get the insurance. Dont let anyone near the steering wheel until all 3 in place.

If you have driving other cars on your own insurance then you can drive it for it’s nct, I wouldn’t even care about it having no tax but you could tax it if you want by giving made up details. You can then insure it.

If she didn’t declare the car off the road you will also either have to pay all the back tax or else she will need to “sell” it to you or another family member and “buy” it back to clear the arrears.

Would a letter from her doctor not suffice, to let them know that she could not drive it due to health issues anyway, not her fault that she got sick and could not drive the car

They now require you to declare it off the road in advance.

They just might waive the arrears if asked, though (and on production of a doctor's cert., of course).

Tax it with any insurance number, if the car owes back tax sell it to yourself and back to original owner, no back tax owed for "new" owner.

    Insurance is insurance.

Get it to nct and work from there, forget garage until you have a fail sheet from nct.

thanks for the reply guys... just to clarify, she declared it off the road. My issue is that I or anyone else cant legally drive it uninsured in the vehicle and get it to the NCT center and without insurance it cant be taxed. its still officially off the road, she cant get insured on it as its not road worthy (no nct) and has no tax. Surely theres a simple legal solution to this but then again it is Ireland....

it can be taxed without insurance. They ask for a policy number but have no way to verify it.

As Kenny said it cant be verified, you could put your insurance policy details into the system.

Ask somebody who has 'Driving Other Vehicles' on their Insurance Policy to bring to NCT centre. And as far as I know a Declared Off Road vehicle can be driven to an NCT centre if the test has been booked.....

What if I'm due to have an NCT while my car is off the road?
A vehicle may be used during the period of a non-use declaration in two cases:

to bring it to and from a test centre for the test; or
to bring it for repair after a re-test, or back to where you are keeping it while it is off the road after the repairs. This option may only be used where an appointment has already been made for a re-test.
The same rules apply to roadworthiness testing for commercial vehicles:

If you are bringing the vehicle to a test centre or to or from repairs after a test failure, it would be advisable to carry a copy of the appointment for the test or re-test with you.

There is nothing to change. In a situation where your insurance policy expires the day after you tax it, your insurance number will be change anyway. It's really a pointless exercise and I wouldn't worry about it.

Erm as I said in your first reply...a tow truck..

A lot of mechanics would have a car trailer, and so could collect your car and give it a check and a service, but a tow truck to the nct centre (and back), is probably the easiest option then insure it...

It can be driven without tax, but it still has to be insured and have a valid NCT.
