EDT lessons timeframe

    Hi all,

I want to do my 12 EDT lessons to obtain my driving licence. However, I want to complete this under the recommended 24 week period. This is due to my intention to emigrate to Canada within the next 4 to 6 months.

I would really like to have my full driving licence before I head over. Would it be possible to complete the 12 lessons in around 3 months, so one lesson per week?

I have got some driving experience, albeit as a novice but I am pretty confident behind the wheel and quick at learning.

Cheers in advance for any info/help.

Lessons wise it probably is possible, but it's the waiting for a driving test that's probably gonna be the longest part. That does also depend on the part of the country you're in, but I waited over 6 months to even get a date for my first driving test. Best of luck!

You can do the lessons as fast as your instructor is willing to give them; the recommended period is only a recommendation. There are even schools which will give the entire EDT syllabus over a single weekend (though that isn't the best approach for a true novice driver; those are more aimed at foreigners who can't exchange their license or other people who have plenty of driving experience already). However, you still can't take the road test until you've held your first learner's permit for at least six months, so keep that in mind. As Kitty6277 mentioned, though, the wait times for the test are going to be your biggest obstacle, as they are sometimes in excess of six months these days; if you are able to be flexible, you can try calling daily for a cancellation slot, but even that is no guarantee.

I am on a permit and the 6 month rule - also I have nearly all my lessons done and I'm now stretching out the last few - but what I did to speed up the process was apply for my test anyway, I won't get a date until all my EDT lessons are completed and the 6 months has elapsed but at least I won't be on the waiting list for a further few months. Don't know if that might help you?

Yes, just remember you must hold your learner's permit for at least 6 month. Make sure that your instructor uploads that you've completed the lessons online and once they're all online book the test asap. Keep ringing the RSA for cancellations everyday.

Good look with getting you 12 EDT lessons in a 3-month time frame. I've been trying to take one every 2 weeks, instructor keeps rescheduling lessons due to apparent personal issues (not entirely sure if these are legit excuses or made up at this stage tbh) so the last few have been 1 month apart.

Can you not find someone else? I did a few two-hour lessons so I'm flying through them but taking a little break now and practicing -
Hope you can get the practice in, in between the lessons -

Well I paid for the whole lot on the first session to avail of the discount & I'm more than half way through, so I may as well stick it out at this point.

Yeah, no problem getting in plenty of practice in between lessons though. I've been taking lessons & regular (usually daily) driving practice in between since mid-April.

Assuming after next weeks lesson I can return to having one each 2nd week, I should be finished early October.

Btw, one of the upcoming lessons is supposed to be a 2 hour session, does this normally count as 2 edt lessons?
