Volvo S40 slow to start

So I bought an S40 2005 last week and even when I was shown the car it struggled to start. So couple of things learnt. One it's a diesel so you go to position II in the ignition and when all the lights go out on the dash you go to position III. So that helped to know. So the you go to position III and sometimes it starts and sometimes nothing happens. And then I learnt another lesson. If the car does not immediately start continue to hold it in position III and it will start within about 10 seconds at worst. Is this normal is my question? I know the car has not been used and has been sitting idle for 6 months. Is it normal or a dead battery issue?

    Definitely not normal.

I doubt it is battery issue as if it doesn't start, it dies and won't start no matter what.

    Get it checked by mechanic.

What the seller said at the time?

Probably a faulty starter motor and when it turns, it might not be spinning fast enough to start the engine

Is it diesel? Could be faulty glow plugs causing a slow or struggling start.

It's a 2l diesel. It doesn't seem to be a slow starter. Most times it will not start immediately. That said you hold it to position III it eventually starts
