BMW 5 Touring M Sport 2WD or xDrive?

What would be the recommendation between the two 2018 5 series Touring M Sport or same model but xDrive version. Both 2l diesel and automatic and roughly same mileage. The difference in terms of the price would be around €6-€7k.

What kind of loss in terms of the value could I expect after 2yrs and which model would be more desirable from resale point of view.

I was looking at 2016 from an irish dealer but it will cost me only €10k to €16k more in the UK to get 2018 depending on the version.

Will also throw in the 2017 Mercedes CLS Estate either 7g or 9g-tronic in the mix but that will depend on the test drive. From what I was told both BMW and Merc would be covered by the warranty in the Irish dealerships.

    Thanks

Unless you have a serious requirement for 4wd, I can’t see why you would get x drive. Or if you feel it would give you more confidence to have it, then maybe it’s worth it to you. The price gap you quoted though seems very big for otherwise identical models.
As regards depreciation, I would expect over two years about 20k would be conservative enough in the current Irish market. These cars shed loads especially in the early years.

As regards the cls, they’re a car I’ve always loved the look of but never sold well here and are very rare. Mercedes have decided not to do the shooting brake on the new model either as it never was as popular as hoped.
Unless you were going for a three litre model I would have the Bmw as the 2.1 engine in the merc isn’t great and the interior feels dated now.

I'd forgo the X drive and get a set of Winter tyres if winter driving is a concern. Keep in mind a RWD on Winters will grip better than an X-Drive on Summers. €6k saved.

X-Drive is also heavier, different CO2 bracket and suspension ride height is higher than M-Sport.

Suspension is the same on both x drive and rear drive on the current 5.

You will get very little of the price difference back when you go to sell the x drive in the future though.

Thanks for all the feedback. I just finished test drive in the A6 Avant and have to say it really surprised me. Felt much nicer than the BMW for some reason.

A6 is on its last legs as a model so should be great value if that’s the way you want to go.
Personally wouldn’t buy a car that is just being replaced unless it’s way way cheaper.

X-drive would be well down on the list of options I'd be putting on my touring - I'd be spending that money on stuff I use everyday, adaptive suspension, easy access or even a massive sun roof for light.

Also, I agree with having a set of 16" wheels with winter tires would be much better suited to irish winter.
