Smart watches

I was fluting about in Arnotts today and happened across the Hugo Boss Smart Watch.

Now its a little gimmicky but does have its uses, for me namely for work meetings etc when you generally dont have your phone on you but can get notifications through the phone, and even whilst driving if you dont want to go near your phone, or even when cycling.

But what i really like about it is the various different faces and customisations you can have.

Anyone have any feedback on this or something similar worth looking at? Thanks

Glancing at your watch comes across as the same as glancing at your phone (i.e. it looks rude); it really doesn't add that much value IMO.

Some of the purists hate them (but are totally fine with digital watches and the likes of garmin ones). I tried one for a while, but I just struggled to find a use for it. The fitness angle might be where they finally succeed (which definitely rules me out).

There were a few features that were kinda cool, but when I took it off I didn't feel like I had lost all that much. The need to charge all the time didn't help.

If you don't normally wear a watch or aren't particularly attached to one you do wear, it could be an option. But given the very quick obsolescence, I wouldn't spent too much.

Depends on the person, I had a couple and didn't use them, in fact all they did is get me back into wearing a normal watch again after about 10 years of not wearing them. I can't really see a use other than novelty of checking stuff. My only advice is get one that's always on, some are off and wrist movement turns them on. Which only works 50% of the time, so defeats the purpose of owning one. I like the Samsung Gear s3 classic and frontier, but at £300 for something you'll have to charge all the time and will be out of date in 3 years is a bit much, you could buy a great "real" watch for the same price.
Rather than go full smart watch, check out stuff like casio edifice, some of them have Bluetooth and may have the features you need while they look like a really nice watch too.
But if you really want a smart watch, I'd still be wary of the Hugo Boss watch. It looks similar to the Samsung gear s3 but I guarantee the S3 will do everything better software wise than the HB watch.

I think the 1970's Seiko calculator watch was the pinnacle of smart watch acceptability on this forum :).
On the edifices, I really liked them online and came very close to buying one several times but then after a brief hands-down encounter in a watch shop I was very disappointed with the feel. A bit chintzy and cheap feeling and looking up close. :(.

If you want a smart watch, of course get yourself a smart watch but know that it's inevitably destined for the recycling bin, whereas there are plenty of 3 to 5 hundred euro watches around that you will always sell on again for.... well... 3 to 5 hundred euro.

I found a smart watch annoying and intrusive. As a watch they kind of suck. Yeah for fitness I see the point. I sold mine after initial enthusiasm, and had no problem finding buyers at only minor loss. As jewelry (which is what a wrist watch is in this day and age) they are almost useless.

Might just knock that on the head. Seen a nice Hamilton (non smart) one too lol

The correct decision imho. More fun shopping for a real watch, there's so much to choose from.

Someday I will have a use for a smart watch. But not with their current functionality and looks. Most are ugly.
Had a couple over the past 2 years that were flipped.

Wear your watch with the face on the bottom of your wrist (i.e. upside down) and you can glance at it without anyone thinking you're checking the time.

Got this tip from the watches Presidents wear article posted last week :P

I cunningly check my watch while yawning really, really loudly in meetings.

Yawn really loudly and tap your watch. Let them know the meeting is boring and going on too long :D

I get irrationally annoyed when I see people wear watches like that. It's like when people open a packet of tayto upside down.

Any decent smart watch has hundreds of different faces available.

I have the Huawei Watch. Looks like a normal watch. I bought a 2 but I'm going to sell it. That looks more like a sport/digital watch.

This is the Huawei. Can reply to messages, dismiss notifications, change radio station and volume on my phone. You still need your phone with you as it's connected by Bluetooth.

Don't have that face on it currently. Have a silver face which suits the watch better.

The face only shows when you bring the watch up. When your arm is at rest it displays a battery saving crappy display. If you turn the watch face on all the time you get about 2 hours out of it. I had the Huawei classic and watch 2.

What's the point having it on under your sleeve? Works pretty well at turning on when I move my wrist.

Most smart watches I've seen look particularly ugly and uninspired. A lot of them don't really seem to sit right on people's wrists either. End up looking like a little blank black rectangle protruding from their wrists on a generic strap.

That Huawei Watch looks kind of nice, but if it only displays the face when you engage with it then it's a no for me too. (another big issue I have with smart watches)

If someone could create one that had a nice design, always on face and didn't chew through batteries I might be interested.

Definitely. Had 2 that weren't always on, a load of shíte imho. Might suit some people though.

Samsung gear s3 classic and frontier look good. Anything square looks terrible imho

It's just a setting whether you want it always on or not.

I have the Nokia Steel HR. Does everything I need it too, and looks rather classy I think.

It does look good - I think the original Withings looks great, as it looks exactly like an analogue watch.

Meh, I'd say the same about many normal watches too. I've not seen too many rectangle ones though, other than the Apple Watch and the Pebble, both of which I owned actually.

One thing going for the Apple Watch which has nothing to do with technology, is the strap change system. Absolutely fantastic. Don't know if it'd work for normal watches though.

What do you mean? The Huawei is a normal watch strap so can be replaced by any of those.

I mean the Apple Watch's strap change system is very good, but I am not sure its design would work for watches that do not follow the same form factor. E.g. standard round watches. It can be stupidly awkward to change a bracelet on a normal watch.

The strap on mine can be done by hand with no tools. What you replace it with depends on the strap as it's a regular size watch face.

I bought a Pebble off kickstarter years ago, it was nice and gimmicky at the time but the 2 things that really annoyed were the fact that it was a different charger than my phone and when I was driving it was very distracting to have your watch flash or vibrate.

One thing I hate is people who have gave the ability to put customized faces on their smart watches and put a luxury logo like pp, Rolex, breitling or omega on it.
    Why?!!!

Another square watch, but Cartier’s take on it seems excellent on the new Santos.

I've been tinkering with the notion of snagging the very first generation of the Apple Watch as a "future collectible" and a frivolous fancy. I'm partial to that. :D

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Im contemptating myself to buy the apple watch series 3. Only thing that puts me off is that you need your iphone with you all times and need to be connected to wifi/Bluetooth. At the moment I don't have an iPhone but with my next upgrade in a month if I do get the watch I might aswell have to get the iPhone for the upgrade. Any other smartwatch recommendations?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

I think that's the wrong way around - I think a smartwatch is a companion to the phone. I'd be picking the smartwatch that works with my phone.

What do you guys think of this watch, thinking of getting that ? A seller is offering it for 150E.

If you're getting an iPhone the only watch that makes sense is the Apple Watch.
