Divorce in another country

    If a couple get married in Brazil (where they can divorce immediately) and then return to Ireland as a married couple. If they eventually want to divorce, do they have to wait the 5 year period according to Irish law or can they divorce immediately according to Brazilian law? I don't understand which laws apply. Thank you

    In general, the laws of the resident country apply.

    If both partners are living in Ireland, then they must follow Irish law. In order to follow Brazilian law, one or both partner must be ordinarily resident in Brazil at the time the divorce proceedings are started - i.e. you can't fly to Brazil for a "quickie divorce".

    question on this - does a marriage need some special registration in ireland in order to be possible to get a divorce here ?
