New starter needed for car?

My car starts fine in the morning and after a long day of work.

However, if I’m after being driving for a prolonged period and turn off the car when I go to turn it back on again, it takes a few attempts to start.

Why does it cold start perfectly but struggle to start when warm?

It could be losing compression when it's hot. Valve clearance (tight) . Head gasket. If it's cranking it's not the starter. You could have a sensor, fuel, ignition or electrical problem.

    1.4 L diesel Peugeot 207 manual.

Could it be expensive to repair?

If the problem is warm starts only then I'd say the starter motor is fine, and the problem is elsewhere...

A few things, when was the car last serviced, in particular the air, fuel and oil filters?

It might be worth getting the compression tested when cold and hot. However, keep in mind your failure is only occurring when the car is hot. For a mechanic to diagnose your car, you will need to reproduce the problem.

My own hunch is that it is probably a faulty crankshaft sensor. Not big money to fix.

If you're not under warranty, go to an independent Peugeot specialist rather than a main dealer.

Numerous potential causes, like what spiggotpaddy listed.

Had the same problem with a 1.9 tdi golf, the starter had slowed, when the engine was hot the ecu won't inject diesel until a certain rpm was reached, which it couldn't as the starter was slow, was fine when cold, new starter fixed it.

    Inlet valve guides issue possibly

The diesel hand pump of 1.4HDI tends to develop tiny cracks where it can draw in air. Also the fuel pressure sensor and /or the plug at the end of the fuel rail can cause issues too.
I would start with something simple like the these, before valves, headgaskets etc.
I'm sure fellow Boardsie Row could shed some light on the issue ;)
