Transferring the 'credits' from driving lessons from another country to IE

    Hi,
My boyfriend and I will be moving to Ireland from Belgium next month and he's currently working on getting his driver's license (taking driving lessons at the moment). It won't be possible for him to take the actual driving test here until November (we'll be in Ireland by then anyway) and we wanted to know if the lessons he's taking now here can count for something in Ireland or not (obviously, there are things like driving on the opposite side of the road etc that he's going to need to get a quick 101). After his lessons he is only going to have a 'provisory/temporary' license, but we aren't sure if he can use it in Ireland. We were thinking he can take the lessons here, maybe sign up for a quick theory course there and obtain his license in Ireland. Any tips would be appreciated.

No. His permit will not work in Ireland. Nor will his lessons transfer. He will need to sit an Irish theory test and apply for a learner permit, and then be bound to complete the 12EDT lessons and wait 6 months before you can sit your test.

I'm not sure the system in Belgium, this kind of implies you have to do lessons before getting a licence of any sort. In Ireland you can get a learner permit without any lessons (you do have to do a theory test). With this you can drive the car when accompanied by a fully licensed driver. And it is at this point you do the minimum 12 lesson.

I think he'd be better flying back and doing it in Belgium, then exchanging the licence. I suspect he would have to start from scratch again in Ireland.

I would also agree with this. Aside from starting from scratch which will obviously take quite a bit of time, there's also the amount of time he'll actually have to wait to take his driving test once he's qualified to do so. Easier just to go back to Belgium and do it there
