If someone has been convicted of a serious crime in the Central Criminal Court. What would the purpose of have a probation report carried out before sentencing?

Its not likely that the probation act will be applied in light of the crime committed.
    Thanks

It's purpose is to guide the judge as to which sentence is most appropriate.

It has nothing to do with considering whether or not to apply the Probation Act. It is a report from the probation service who investigate the personal circumstances of the convicted person. It might influence the suspension of some or all of a custodial sentence.
