Hi folks.
Just wondering if anyone can help with some questions I have with regard to getting a non subscription based satellite system installed.
I’ve been with Sky for about 10 years but am finding them very expensive.
I’ve found out that I could get a free service for just a one off payment. The stations I’d get are what I’m getting at the moment anyway plus the ITVs which would be a bonus.
I honestly haven’t a clue about this system at all.
It seems to good to be true. Is there a catch anywhere? Would the Sky boxes I have now be replaced with different ones and what about recording?
Sorry for the daft questions but I don’t know the workings of this at all but it’s definitely something I’m interested in.

Saorview Connect is a new box on the market. It offers the saorview channels but tv3 and tg4 are in sd. You will also have a catchup internet based service for rte1/2 and tg4 on the tv guide. The saorview channels have a 7 day forwards/backwards epg. Clicking the On Demand button on the remote takes you to the rte and tg4 apps. No other apps are on the box.

The box also allows you to access the most popular free to air satellite channels with many of them in HD. It has only now/next on the epg. The channels are listed together (about 40 of them packaged together including bbcs, itv, c4 and c5 in HD).

You will need a uhf aerial and a satellite dish to receive both saorview and satellite channels.

The one remote controls both and can also control your tv.

Recording is not yet available on the box but due at the end of July.

There are other options out there to give you a 7 day epg on both saorview and satellite but I will leave others to explain that.

If you were using your Sky box for FTA; you won't be able to view the Irish channels on it without a valid Sky subscription.

To have the Irish stations; you will have to use Saorview or Saorview Connect with an aerial.

Re: ITV/UTV

You will get all of the ITV regions free on satellite from England & Wales if use Freesat or Free to air satellite. UTV NI is included as well.

All are available in HD without an subscription.

ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, ITVBe & CITV including the +1's are available for free in SD.


About the recordings.

If you use a Freesat box or TV; you can use series link to record stuff on them.

If you use a basic FTA combi box; you have to manually record programmes yourself through an external hard drive or USB.


Other differences between Freesat & FTA Satellite.

A 7 Day EPG is available through Freesat. A FTA Satellite EPG is now & next only.

If new channels are available; Freesat automatically updates the EPG like Sky whenever new channels are added.

New channels through FTA Satellite requires manual tuning of channels on your part.

There are quite a number of boxes available which combine tuners for both Satellite and Terrestrial channels (combi boxes).

If you have been using a Satellite dish for Sky and paying them you will now need to get a terrestrial aerial to receive the Saorview channels as they are subscription only on satellite.

Is your need for one only TV or do you hope to have all the channels available in multiple rooms?
That will impact on what you need to get and how you set it up.

You won't get any of the channels labeled "video guard" in the encryption column in this link...

If you have Sky Q then you'll need a new receiver and also a different LNB (on dish arm).

The Saorview channels are via an aerial into your TV or satellite & terrestrial combo box.

The most simple system to get is a freesat box.

Get one with a hard drive, so you can record/series link etc.

Both boxes referred to are Freeview (terrestrial) not Freesat (satellite), they should work on Saorview, you cannot reorder the channel numbers. If it's BBC and Itv you want a Freesat box would be best, prices would be very similar.
