    The one that isn't a Tiida. :)

The dealer is Galway is a comedian with his pricing.

    Or the Jetta

    Isn't there a fifth option?

    5. Keep looking.

    Isn't there a fifth option?

What would rule the Jetta out? I know next to nothing about cars, but I thought it seemed good?

I suppose what I'm looking for is something for next 2-3 years as my own has gone the way of the dodo. Not looking to spend much more than around €3k (can't really afford to). Something mechanically sound to get me from a-b. Not doing big drives at the moment but that might change in coming year.

Any and all advice greatly appreciated!

I was thinking Ford Focus also - I like them and they seem to be pretty solid, certainly very popular.

€3k is a healthy budget. You'd get something good with that for sure. Those Jettas are ****e, the 1.6 engine is unreliable, lethargic and not great on fuel, the suspension is soft in them and they are just an awful yoke. If it wasn't for the VW badge people wouldn't touch them.

In that price bracket, Bazz has it nailed, the Corolla and Civic are the best buys, the Focus wouldn't be a bad call either.

Thanks for that! Back to the drawing board :-)

Thanks! I do like the Corollas. Only issue with Toyota for me is trying to get one with low enough mileage, they seem to be well driven!

The one I linked to above has low mileage. Remember that your looking at 10 year old cars, even with an annual low mileage of 10k miles your going to be looking at cars with 100k miles on them now.

Thanks bazz. I was doing a look around and came across this one:

    Does this one seem okay?

That's the older model Corolla which is considered better than the model that followed it. Price seems a bit high given it's a 13 year old car but I'd say there is a nice bit of dealer margin in it. Personally I don't think there is any point in buying from dealers in that price range or age of car as the warranties usually cover very little in the real world as it eat's into the dealer's profit.

Figure out how big a car you need, big differences there in those 3.

I’d avoid the Focus because of the seller, and the Fabia because I don’t think they’re that good with the 1.2.

A few hours will have the inside of any car clean. I bought an ex smokers car and it was covered in tar inside, got it back to normal colour in an afternoon.

Low mileage 08 Hyundai Accent, if you could knock them down on the price a bit closer to your budget:

Or a Corolla with a fresh NCT:

I'm not too bothered about size. At this stage, and because I'm being a bit picky in terms of mileage, I'll happily take big or small.

Is it the Mondeo dealer you'd avoid?

For the Fabia, is the 1.2 too small an engine?

No, just the 1.2 engine is unpleasant and not that reliable.

Mondeos are huge, no point in getting one if you don’t need the space.

Id give that Fabia a wide birth, looks poorly maintained and it's been in some sort of accident. There's not much to be said for that Mondeo either. The Focus looks quite good IMO unless there is local knowledge that says the seller is to be avoided? A Corolla is probably the best shout though for low running costs.

Isn't focus very expensive for what it is. I sold a 05 Ghia Focus 1.6 for 1400 Euro 6 months ago privately and it was pretty clean and well maintained.

I understand it has dealer surcharge on it but with that kind of budget I would look for a private sale and japanese models recommended above.
