Aliens in 70mm at IFI - picture/sound quality?

We were at the showing of Aliens in the IFI last night which was in 70mm - just wondering if anyone else was and what you thought of the picture/sound?

Aliens is one of my favourite movies and I've seen it over 30 times at least - the picture on last nights showing seemed pretty grainy and although the film is 32 years old I was expecting somewhat more.

Any time there was a lot of white on screen (Ripley in the hospital at the start, explosion of the base near the end etc.), the picture had a huge amount of 'noise', scratchy looking black bits on the film etc. There was also two or three black lines running down the screen quite prominently for several portions.

Every so often the film skipped a second or two, probably not that noticeable unless you are very familiar with the film, but definitely there.

The sound was a little odd in places, the music in the opening shot of Ripley's ship was very wonky, and whenever that piece or a variation was re-used, same problem.

So, was I just expecting too much, and a film that old is going to have it's imperfections shown up more clearly on modern equipment, or not?

Aliens was shot on poor quality film stock. It was overly grainy on 35mm never mind 70mm. And those 70mm prints are expensive to produce so they get passed around until they disintegrate.

It's celluloid. Enjoy it, it will be gone soon. The IFI is one of only a couple of cinemas in the country that still project film and the only one with a 70mm projector.
