So, you're clamped. But the clamp doesn't fit around your tyre and you are able to drive away. What do you do?

They have my details, would I be liable to a higher fine if pursued?

If the clamp wasn't damaged you'll be fine.

Okay, must be some Catholic residual guilt I paid the fine. I then told the guy on the phone if I could just drive away and he said okay.

I was due to meet someone in Dublin city centre and when I phoned them enroute they strongly advised I park in the red cow and get the luas in. I did and strange as this may sound didn't even consider I had to pay for parking. Very naive in hindsight.

I wondered afterwards what would have happened if I simply drove away :)

The key piece of information you haven't added is whether it was a local authority clamp or a private clamp. If it was an LA clamp you did the right thing, if it was private then you just gave some highway robber your money and he didn't even need to pull out his gun.

Would he just leave the clamp on the footpath or bring it with him and drop it into the clamp office later?

I had this exact situation before with a private clamping co. Rang the local garda station and asked if its illegal to take it off.. the guard was very nice and said its not illegal to take it off provided its not damaged in the process.

I took my wheel off, took off the poorly attached clamp, reattached the wheel and drove to the local garda station where i dropped it off - much to the guards amusement! I then rang the private clamping co and tood them where they can collect their clamp!

If it was a private clamp, I'd find a deep hole and drop it in there.

Why would anybody go to any effort whatsoever to do a favour for a clamping company. I’ve two in the shed. If they want them back they’re paying storage fees.
