Job offer withdrawn after medical

    The company I worked for for nearly 25 years closed this year.. before the closure was announced I had a episode of back pain which was diagnosed as prolapse disc. I was out of work for over a year, and the closure took place while I was out. I attended two specialists and had 2 rounds of nerve injections to help with the back spasms and allow the back to heal.
    I am now back to 95% fitness and applying for jobs. I am an electrician.
    I was offered a job pending a medical last week and I declared on premed form that I had a back issue previously. Because of this declaration the company has said that it was too much of a risk to them and myself. How a doctor can play God with someone who has been honest is not sitting well with me.
    Mentally I am now doubting myself going forward getting a decent job that will pay mortgage and educate my family.
    Was it a mistake to be honest??

    I think its harsh to say that the Doctor was playing God.
    He was just doing his job. Basically your back is unproven in work scenarios for over a year. The last time you were working you injured your back. Its understandable that any company would bypass you if they have alternatives.

    What you could do is try to prove yourself to them while lowering the risk for them. Maybe this is a couple of months on reduced pay or a monthly contract or something, but other than that I can 100% understand the companies point of view.

    I also can understand the company's point of view but my own GP had pronounced me fit for work as did the chartered physio that I had been attending. I did say to company that I didn't have an issue with conditions added to contract because of issue

    Do you have your GP and Physio declarations in writing or are they willing to say it to the company?

    What exactly did the company say to you?

    My doctors declaration and the physio's was forwarded to the doctor doing medical.
    The company just said they were making the desicion based on the medical doctors report back to them.

    I'd have done the same if I was a potential employer. No one wants to hire a guy who's been absent from his previous job for over a year with back problems, especially the line of work your in pulling cables ect.

    I assume that was their own doctor?
    Can you ask for a copy of his report?

    This comes down to the potential liability for the company if they hire the OP. I know 2 people who had back problems and both ended up having surgery. Both were OK after the surgery but a few months later and both have fecked up backs again. So while the OP is nearly fit now the company can't risk them doing any physical work in case they damage their back again and sparks is a fairly physical job.

    Companies are crying out for electricians for site work, seriously. Us sparkies are extremely scarce. You'll have no problem walking into a job on a site and a medical won't come into it, if you're qualified you're hired.

    It sounds like hes not on site, Id imagine its a facilities roll hes going for or maybe a specialist field job. Hard to go back to sites after that.

    I started my career on sites but got a start indoors in maintenance, got used to good conditions indoors but certainly not opposed to going back to my roots!!
