Turbo on the way out?

    Hi guys,
I have a 2005 Ford Transit, 90k kilometers on it. There's always been a little bit of a whistle\whine out of the engine when I put the accelerator down, which I'm told is the Turbo kicking in. It used to be just when the engine was just under heavyish strain, going up a steep hill for example, but in the last few months its far more noticeable. Any time I put the accelerator down its there, and quite loud when under strain. Is this a sign the Turbo is on the way out? Can a mechanic diagnose whether its on the way out? Rough cost of getting a reconditioned one put in?

    Thanks

Has your hearing got better? ;-) COuld be turbo on way out but could also be leaking inlet hose.
Gasket / clamp near the turbo on exhaust side leaking... wouldn't call that a "Quite loud" noise though.
If it starts to sound like a dentists drill then for sure I reckon turbo gone.

Mechanic could take off turbo inlet pipe and see if there's a lot of play in the turbo. 20 minutes to do it?

Check the intercooler pipes before bringing it to someone. If its making an owl or whislte sound the throttle off, chances are there's too much wear in your shaft bearings. But check your intercooler pipes for leaks first. Look for oily deposits around the pipe for tell tale signs of a leak.
