Hyundai I40 Clutch issue

    I40 1.7 Diesel 85K KMS

    Clutch hard to press,
    Bite point close to the Floor,
    Gear's stiff if Clutch not floored,

    I am aware from looking at the Internet there is a problem with the Clutches on the I40 and possibly other Hyundai model's.

    I took it to the Main Dealer to do a Diagnostic - they say it need's a new 3 part Clutch kit - if that does not cure it - they will try a Master Cylinder / Damper / Slave Cylinder.

    It appear's they are unable to say what the exact problem is and give the impression there is not an issue with the I40 Clutches.

    As I understand it the extent of the Diagnostic was to drive the Car. I asked them did they check the Master, Slave Cylinder or Damper and the answer is no.

    18 minutes spent on the Car - charged €44.65 which equates to €148 per hour plus Vat.

    Quote €810 to fit the Clutch and if that does not cure it they will try as above.

    Anybody else have a similar issue.

    Cure?

    The fee for looking at it is the fee for looking at it unfortunately, generally they will waive that fee or subtract it from repairs if you do the repair work with them. I assume the car is not in warranty?

    This is a very popular problem with Hyundais and the easiest check you can do is pedal feel for this issue. To physically "check" the clutch kit or slave cylinder involves removing the gearbox which would take (and cost) hours and even at that a visual inspection won't really tell you anything. Pedal feel is the best gauge of this issue.

    The clutch pressure plate is the cause of the issue. If you are paying for the work you should really get the slave cylinder done while th gearbox is out, the part is only an extra €80 ish and it probably has suffered wear from the heavy pedal symptoms, it'd also cost you double if you had to go back in and do it after fitting the clutch kit initially.

    If it's our of warranty you will get places that will fit a clutch kit cheaper than the main dealer. I think I'd heard that OEM clutches are still the best choice though even though they are crap, some of the cheaper spurious brands wear even worse in them.
