Are you offended

What is it with people being offended by the slightest thing? . I know this isn't a new thing but it's getting more and more common, in such a way that you can't say BOO to someone under the age of 30 these days without them scrambling for a safe space.

A small beep from a car warning a pedestrian, greeted with the two finger salute. Saying "excuse me" when trying to get past someone who has for some reason stuck themselves in a precarious position behind a door blocking egress and endangering themselves. Again greeted with a negative reaction.

My wife deals with young kids in her job quite a lot and one recently when corrected about his behavior (which is her job) told her that he "doesn't feel safe"

These are just a few quick examples that I came across recently. Browse boards.ie and you'll quickly come across a whole host of them. What has caused this sudden proliferation of people being "offended" by the slightest thing these days ?

Adults are becoming just as bad.

Yesterday these two get on a bus and only had notes. I had change so was able to dig them out they then proceeded to argue with me and the other driver as to how it's legal tender etc etc.

2 Muppets couldn't see I had saved them waiting for the next bus oh and I was the driver taking over from the other so was actually been very accommodating and helpful but that was hit with negative....

I really don't understand people at all.

I saw the biggest adult flipout of my life in Bangkok a while back..

A foreign woman freaked out at two Thai people who sat at her table because there were no other seats. She almost started crying she got herself so riled up and then she stormed off before her food even arrived. She even used the word "offensive" in her non-coherent rant.

It's one of the best things that has ever happened to my online browsing. I imagine her when I see people on here getting all offended.

It's just down to bad parenting tbh. Kids that haven't heard "No" enough or haven't had rules to adhere to seem to become scobes or Trigglypuff wannabes.

My mate was in town a couple of weeks ago. He's heading up the escalator in the jervis centre and spots 2 young ones standing at the top (tie dye tshirts, scruffy braided hair - you get the type). He winds up literally barging them out of the way after trying to get past by saying excuse me. Fairly large crowd of people backing up on the escalator and one of the dopes turns round and shouts "oh my God, what do you want us to do"? He says as quick as a flash a young dub shouts "gerrup outta de fcuking way for starters"!!

My friend volunteers at a local youth club. At an LGBT outing recently, one young girl, who happens to be lesbian, mentioned that she didn't understand how someone could want to change gender. She wasn't being in any way critical, she was merely observing, in the company of both LGBT, and heterosexual youths, that more discussion was needed, even among the LGBT community, never mind the heterosexual community, to promote understanding.
Her comment was met with general agreement, until someone decided to get offended on behalf of the trans community .

The irony? He was male, middle class, and heterosexual!
Exactly why he felt entitled to get offended remains a mystery?
I'd have thought the general opinion of the LGBT community would have been more valid - but there you go.

I disagree, that is actually a by product of the offense culture.

Camera phones and social media is where this has really picked up.
People waiting with their camera's ready to pounce on anything, absolutely anything that they can record and post to social media in the hope that they can get shares and followers.
This became so ingrained that it spilled over into daily life and not solely social media now.

Are you trying to tell me that 30 years ago a beep of a car horn would have been met with a conciliatory, "Oh pardon me, my good fellow, I do apologise for my short-sighted mistake, and I warmly thank you for your delightful note of warning. It shan't happen again, good day".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,809 ✭✭✭Hector Savage

It's from the generation of kids being told "You can do anything" ... "You can BE anything" ... getting prizes for finishing last in a race etc ..
    safe spaces ...

God help us all when these spoilt brat morons become politicians ..

Agreed. The 'everyone gets a prize for taking part thing' is ridiculous. They need to learn that it's not like that in the real world.
My nephew is 22 and constantly 'offended' and worse again, 'triggered'.

I always find this such an interesting subject.

Lets use a joke as an example; its only offensive if its offensive to them but they can make jokes about you all they want unless your offended, then if your offended your no fun.

"Its all okay or none of it is"

People getting offended is not new, we just hear about it more because of t'interweb. Remember the outrage when Tommy Tiernan had the nerve to make a few gentle jokes about the Catholic Church on the Late Late? Julian Clary's joke about Norman Lamont arguably cost him his career. And all because people were offended.

It's sort of funny, mostly sad that they don't realise that they've made after hours into their own safe space they can run to for validation and reinforcement every time theyre offended by some little incident or encounter with someone else being offended
