Hi, I am hoping to buy a van thats on UK plates from a guy who is in Ireland, he's the registered owner and I think has been using it here for a couple of months. Would that cause me problems when trying to register it here? Will they look for proof of the date of import? Thanks.

Get a signed receipt with date of purchase from him.

If it's a private sale a written invoice will probably do no good. Not sure if it's the same for commercials if it's a commercial Van but when I imported my car privately and the same with my buddy we had to pay VRT penalty from the last tax date of the car as we didn't have any ferry tickets or a VAT invoice from a registered dealer. The penalty was from the last tax date in the UK, wasn't bad for me but my buddy had to pay €1500 VRT instead of the quoted €720.

I heard similar alright but I'm not sure how they expect someone to get an official type invoice from a private seller.

Yeah you can't really, if you import from NI or buy a UK reg privately here you may possibly get screwed. If buying from the UK you'll generally have proof as you'll have the ferry ticket for the car with the Reg on it. Silly but we all well know our country likes to screw people for taxes.
